Some telecom companies are getting into preferential partnerships with websites and apps in violation of net-neutrality. What this means is that either your favourite app or website might not be available for access by a particular telecom provider or that data usage would be charged at a higher rate or your internet speed would be throttled when you visit them. On the other hand, the so-called "partners" to this ecosystem will reap undue benefits because these websites or apps could possibly be accessed for free or at higher speeds than others.

This might make you use apps and sites that you did not like or switch telecom providers just to get access to what you want.

What can you do about this?

Surfers/users need to do everything possible to make sure that the internet stays neutral. Join this campaign to support net neutrality, and to tell TRAI that you oppose a regulated and telecom-controlled Internet.

The nine Raju men convicted

1.

Vadlamani Srinivas: Chief financial officer, Satyam

He worked closely with the brothers in inflating company's books. Srinivas quit soon after scam came to light, blamed firm's external auditors — PricewaterhouseCoopers — along with Ramalinga, for perpetrating the fraud. Rumours said he attempted suicide. His statement kept him out of trouble for a while, but the law soon caught up with him. Arrested on charges of cheating, he was granted bail along with the brothers.

2.

Prabhakar Gupta: Global head, Satyam's internal audit team

He failed to brief audit panel of irregularities in company's books. CBI said Gupta connived with the Rajus by not raising an alarm over accounts being inflated. He did not stand up to the Rajus when they denied access of software highlighting irregularities for an independent audit. He is banned for life by ICAI.

3.

B Rama Raju, brother: MD, Satyam Computers

This younger sibling, together with Raju Sr, was at the forefront of the financial fraud and even "hid the deception from the company's board, senior managers and auditors", said the probe. A primary accused, he was arrested soon after scam came to light. He got bail in October, 2012.

4.

S Gopalakrishnan and Srinivas Talluri: Former senior partners of PWC (India)

The firm that audited Satyam between 2001 and 2008. The duo was charged with colluding with Satyam founder. The US Securities and Exchange Commission penalized PwCIndia, accused it of not following basic audit procedures. Firm was asked to cough up $7.5 million in fine. The two were banned for life by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Their special leave petitions filed in apex court were also dismissed.

5.

Suryanarayana Raju (3rd from top), brother: Chief, SRSR Holdings Private Ltd

His firm laundered assets of crime's proceeds. He managed to stay out of jail and even after his arrest, quickly secured bail. He has been trying to restart his family's realty business.

6.

G Ramakrishna, VP, Finance, Venkatapathi Raju, CH Srisailam, Finance managers

They are ex-employees of Satyam Computers who helped create false invoices to hoodwink stakeholders.

Foot-in-mouth ministers are a bigger threat than a matchstick

Indian PM Narendra Modi can surely do without some of his foot-in-mouth ministers and their ridiculous statements. The latest to join the bandwagon is the civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathy Raju. The minister, who is also a heavy smoker, not only justified carrying match-boxes on flights, but even bragged that being a minister, he is not frisked and hence could save his lighters and matchboxes.

Very funny Mr Minister, but please restrict your silly jokes to within the confines of your drawing room, and do not brag about it in the open. Certainly not when aviation security is a huge concern the world over, what with even the airplane pilots emerging as a new security threat.

There already is a huge heartburn over the VIP status this country affords to far too many people, mostly undeserving. Being elected members, thereby being  'sevaks' of the common man, ministers are at the top of this list. It's a different matter that once they are elected to provide governance to the people, to improve the quality of life of the common man, these elected 'sevaks' go on to become our rulers instead, where rules are applicable to all others except themselves.

However, as one has been repeating increasingly these days, times have changed. Phone cameras have made even an ordinary man into a potential investigative journalist. And with the growing relevance and importance of the social media, the common man even has the platform to propagate all this, sometimes even more successfully than the traditional media could. In fact, often the mainstream media relies on clips and pictures captured by these 'citizen journalists' to raise an important matter of public concern. Not surprisingly, several in the public eye are reportedly taking lessons on how not to get caught out.

Imagine then this minister bragging about what is clearly a threat to aviation safety and adding most shamelessly, and thoughtlessly, that "you can't hijack a plane with a matchbox," and that "I haven't come across any incident worldwide where a matchbox had led to any threat."

Just to refresh this ignoramus' memory, the ban on matchsticks was imposed after Richard Reid, the shoe bomber tried to light an explosive in his shoes on a flight in December, 2001. This was post the 9/11 bombings.

Dear Minister, a matchbox can light a fire, which can set an aircraft on fire. You may not realize, but it can potentially be an even bigger threat than a hijack. Perhaps, if you took your job seriously, or had any respect for the nameless security officers who spend sleepless nights to ensure that our skies are safe, you would not have uttered such nonsense.

The least you can do, Mr Minister, is to apologise to the common man of this country. Let those who elect you get the confidence that the minister in charge of civil aviation is serious about his job. Breaking rules and setting a bad example is certainly not what they expect from you. And the apology should come irrespective of whether the PM censures you even more strongly.

Why India is in hurry to buy Rafale jets

India will now negotiate direct purchase of 36 Rafale jets from France through a government-to-government deal worth around $4 billion, without any "Make in India" or technology transfer component, to meet IAF's urgent "critical operational necessity" for new fighters. After Modi held extensive talks with French President Francois Hollande in Paris on Friday, it was announced that fresh commercial negotiations will now be held for the direct acquisition of two Rafale squadrons (each has 18 jets) in "flyaway" condition. Here is why India was in a hurry to buy Rafale jets:
1.

IAF down to 34 squadrons

Indian Air Force is down to 34 squadrons where as it requires 44 squadrons to be at ease against China and Pakistan.

2.

Obsolete MiG-21s and MiG-27s

IAF's operational 34 squadrons include obsolete MiG-21s & MiG-27s, which are slated for retirement from 2017 onwards.

3.

Serviceability issue with Sukhoi-30MKIs

Serviceability of even new Sukhoi-30MKIs (200 inducted of 272 contracted for $12 billion) is just about 55%.

4.

Huge delay in Tejas project

There has been huge delay in operationalization of India's indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft. Still, the final operational clearance for Tejas Mark-I is unlikely by December 2015. Tejas Mark-II will be ready only by 2021-2022.

5.

Delay in 5th-Gen fighter jets

The Final R&D contract for joint development of Russian 5th-Gen fighter jets is yet to be inked.

Marathi films during prime time: Do you support Maharashtra govt's move?

Wise Citizen, India, 2015-04-08 14:46:19.167

The Chief Minister of "MAHARASHTRA" has asked the theater owners of "MAHARASHTRA" to show a Marathi film in one hall of the multiplex during prime time. He has not asked other state theater owners to do that, but his own. Hence it's but right that the theater owners respect the local language and do screen Marathi film at prime time.

The only reason why people are crying about this imposition is because most of the primetime tickets are highly prized than regular morning shows. Marathi industry produces gem of cinemas and to promote profitability of movies it is an essential step. As a working man I can watch the marathi movies only on weekends since most shows are in morning. The people who have problem with this will tomorrow demand banning of marathi film industry or hollywood dubbed movies. The government should stop this bollywood hypocrisy.

Creating Room for Marathi Movies is appreciable. Hindi Movie makers and Multiplexes should be gracious as one hall one show in multiplexes are not going to kill their revenue. And before people jump in favour of Commercial interests of Multiplex owners....remember the cost of popcorn you spent in Multiplexes

The war between Ajay devgan and SRK a few years back had very well brought to light the muscle flexing done by certain production houses to scuttle movies from other productions. If bigger production houses have to go through this then how do you expect smaller regional productions to see themselves through. Also it cannot be denied that north/Punjabi dominated industry has always been hostile towards Marathi Film Industry. So,to fight this regional bias and money, personal influences/hold, political intervention is necessary.

Dear CM please ask all actors, stakeholders, or anyone related to Indian Movie/TV/Media to move to Delhi or any other place where Hindi is more prevalent. You find Hindi speaking bollywood not relevant to Maharashtra so please ask them to get out. Mumbai is better off them if you cannot respect an industry due to which Mumbai is a dream destination for Indians. Secondly Beef is banned, Chowpati is now swaraj (LOL), Watch Marathi movies instead of hindi forcibly and many more to come. Modi has failed to restrict BJP's main ideology undercover. Development and growth agenda was a camouflage to create a perception which almost everyone in India failed to understand. Maharashtra is now ruled from Nagpur and not Mumbai thus it is obvious to have many more strong and forced decisions on everyone. I regret I voted for BJP the so called progressive government.

I am a Tamil, and a movie enthusiast.I have watched Marati movies and I have felt they deserve greater attention. On other hand Hindi Movies starring Big stars but really horrible movies....
