Chinese woman scales Mount Everest from Nepal side

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Mei 2014 | 08.20

KATMANDU: A Chinese woman and five Sherpa guides have scaled Mount Everest, becoming the first team to reach the peak from the Nepal side after a deadly avalanche last month sent climbers home, officials said on Saturday.

Wang Zing, 40, and her Nepalese guides reached the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit on Friday, said Nepalese tourism ministry official Dipendra Paudel. They were all safe and returning to lower camps.

An avalanche on April 18 swept the route near the base camp, killing 16 Sherpa guides. After the disaster, the guides refused to continue for different reasons, including out of respect for their dead colleagues. Some said they were too shaken to go up the mountain, while others were angry at the government's slow response to help families of the fallen Sherpas.

All the teams eventually decided to cancel their expeditions. The government then issued an incentive saying they could come back any time in the next five years without paying permit fees.

Wang and her team used helicopters to cross the dreaded Khumbu Icefall section between the base camp and Camp 1. The temporary path set over the crevasses by aluminum ladders and ropes were damaged in the avalanche, and a new one was never fixed because all the teams went home.

Wang, however, returned to the world's highest mountain with her own guides.

Except for rescue flights, Nepal's government generally does not allow helicopter flights above the base camp for environmental reasons. But it has not said anything about Wang's decision to use a helicopter.

Wang's team is the only one to scale Everest from the popular southern route from Nepal this season, which ends next week.

Sitaram Yechury says not offered to quit CPI(M) politburo

NEW DELHI: Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury today dismissed reports that he had offered to quit the politburo in view of his party's poor show in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

"All that is nonsense. I never discuss inner-party issues outside," Yechury told PTI when asked about reports that he had offered to resign from the top-most decision-making body of the CPI(M) at a meeting last Sunday.

CPI(M)'s strength sharply fell to nine members in the Lower House in the recent elections, including only two from its bastion in West Bengal, from a total of 16 in the 15th Lok Sabha and 44 in the previous one.

The reports came days after former CPI(M) stalwart Somnath Chatterjee pitched for an immediate change in the party's leadership, accusing it of losing contact with the masses. The former Lok Sabha Speaker was expelled from CPI(M) in 2008.

Pointing out that a new leadership was needed urgently, he said: "In the party there is a good pool of talented young men and women leaders who can take over the reins to steer the party."

The reports said Yechury's offer to quit was rejected by the party leadership, including general secretary Prakash Karat who has been speaking of "collective responsibility".

Yechury, a member of Rajya Sabha, is the leader of the CPI(M)'s parliamentary group. He is also a long-time chairman of the Parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture.

The CPI(M) politburo, which had held preliminary discussions on the election results on May 11, would meet again on June 6.

This meeting would be followed by that of the central committee on June 7 and 8 to hold in-depth discussion on the problems facing the party and its organisation, especially in West Bengal, apart from analysing its electoral performance.

UNITED NATIONS: UN chief Ban Ki-moon would "very much hope" that India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the UN general assembly later this year and particularly participate in the climate change summit, according to a top official of the world body.

"We would very much hope that Modi would come to the general assembly and especially attend the secretary general's climate change summit," Ban's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told PTI yesterday when asked if the UN chief has spoken to Modi following his election as India's Prime Minister.

"India has a big role to play on the issue of climate change, has very important contributions to make and we would hope to see him here in New York in September for this climate change summit," Dujarric said.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan today completed the induction of 13 frontline F-16 fighter jets into its air force, augmenting its aerial defence capability.

The new jets were bought from Jordon and have been made part of the fourth squadron of US-made F-16 planes.

Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, who was the chief guest at an impressive induction ceremony at Mushaf Airbase Sargodha in Punjab province, said Pakistan air force (PAF) had a crucial role in the defence of the country.

He said these aircraft will further increase the professional capabilities of the air force.

Pakistan air chief marshal Tahir Rafique Butt said addition of new squadron in the fleet will increase PAF's capacity in combating both internal as well as external challenges.

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif allowed to buy the jets despite financial hardships which shows commitment for the defence of the nation.

Mushaf Airbase, dedicated to former air chief Mushaf Ali Mir, has strategic importance due to the stationing of country's F-16 fleet which is backbone of its air power.

With the inclusion of the 13 jets, the total strength of the PAF F-16s has gone to 76.

Media reports said Pakistan has purchased an entire F-16 squadron from Jordan, consisting of 12 A models and one B model.

The jets "were in good condition since they had attained Mid-Life Update (MLU) and they would be providing service for another 20 years with almost 3,000 hours on average available to them for flying", according to a media report.

Shocking that Congress doesn't have courtesy to greet Modi: Venkaiah Naidu

Written By Unknown on Senin, 19 Mei 2014 | 08.20

HYDERABAD: Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said it is shocking to see Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi not having the courtesy of greeting Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi following the massive mandate received by him.

"Though American president, British Prime Minister, scores of Prime Ministers from across the globe, including our neighbours like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have greeted Narendra Modi, the Congress president and vice president do not have the courtesy or the basic culture of India to greet the person who has got such a massive mandate," Naidu told reporters here.

People of the country have punished Congress for its failure to keep up promises, and the corruption, misrule and policy paralysis, he claimed.

Asked whether RSS would be a power centre with the BJP all set to form the government, Naidu said BJP takes its own decisions on political issues and the Sangh does not interfere in it.

"We are Swayamsevaks and we go to Sangh's office, meet people and talk to Sangh leadership. I worked as party's national president when in power. I never had any such experience. RSS did not put any pressure on any issue. This debate is going on in media.

"There will be no power centre. The (BJP) leadership takes decision after holding consultations with all. You have seen the mandate for Narendra Modi. He is party's leader and he will be Prime Minister and NDA's leader. We will move ahead under his leadership," he said.

Replying to a query about government formation, he said the BJP's parliamentary party would meet tomorrow to elect the leader.

"The President would be informed about it. It is not good to talk about the matter at this juncture. I do not want to give any comment now," he said.

New Delhi Lok Sabha seat won by woman candidate after 54 years

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 18 Mei 2014 | 08.20

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Lok Sabha seat has been bagged by a woman candidate after a gap of 54 years.

In the just-concluded elections for the 16th Lok Sabha, BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi defeated sitting MP and Congress heavyweight Ajay Maken from New Delhi seat by a huge margin.

Lawyer-turned-politician Lekhi, is the second woman to have gained victory on this seat after freedom fighter and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Sucheta Kriplani.

Kriplani was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952 and 1957 from the same constituency.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had won from the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat in 1977 on a Janata party ticket. He managed to retain the seat in 1980 but on a BJP ticket.

In 1984, KC Pant of the Congress was declared elected from New Delhi. In the next two subsequent elections (1989 and 1991), the seat was wrested from the Congress by BJP's L K Advani.

In the subsequent by-election in 1992, cinestar Rajesh Khanna defeated Advani and bagged the seat on a Congress ticket. However, he lost to senior BJP leader Jagmohan in the 1996 elections who retained the seat in the next elections as well.

Jagmohan was defeated by Congress' Ajay Maken who dominated the seat from 2004 to 2014 and was defeated by Meenakshi Lekhi this time.

Lekhi secured 4,53,350 votes, followed by AAP's Ashish Khaitan finishing second with 2,90,642 votes and Congress's Ajay Maken managing a mere 1,82,893 to end up third.

Chopper deal: CBI says it wants to quiz governors as witnesses

NEW DELHI: CBI has clarified to law ministry that it wants to question two governors M K Narayanan and B V Wanchoo of West Bengal and Goa respectively as "witnesses" in connection with its probe in the VVIP helicopter deal.

The law ministry, after initially denying permission to the CBI, recently asked the agency about its motive to question the two governors as they were enjoying constitutional immunity.

After having been denied the permission, the CBI had petitioned the President Pranab Mukherjee's secretariat as it was the appointing authority for the governors.

While rejecting the plea of CBI, the law ministry had said the constitutional posts gave them immunity from prosecution under Article 361 of the Constitution.

But recently, the law Ministry again wrote a letter asking the agency to state its position of examining the two, official sources said.

In its reply, the CBI said it wanted to record statements of Narayanan, who was the then National security adviser, and Wanchoo, who was the then head of elite special protection group (SPG) guarding the Prime Minister.

The sources said the agency has made it clear that the two constitutional functionaries would be approached as witnesses for recording their statements in the case.

The CBI had sought permission to record their statement as part of its probe into alleged payment of Rs 360-crore bribe in the deal that was scrapped by the government last year.

While reasoning for recording of their statements, the CBI has said Wanchoo and Narayanan had participated in the meeting in 2005 that allowed key changes in the technical specifications.

The CBI claims that the parameters regarding the height at which the helicopters can fly as also the flight evaluation were changed in a manner that enabled AgustaWestland to clinch the deal vis a vis its competitor Sikorsky.

China blames Xinjiang rail attack on separatist group

BEIJING: Chinese authorities blamed an April railway attack in Xinjiang on an Islamic extremist group, state media said on Sunday, reinforcing Beijing's claims that separatist militants are provoking domestic unrest.

The far-west Xinjiang region, home to the mainly Muslim Uighur minority, has seen periodic violence.

Beijing says it faces an increase in terrorism from a violent separatist movement there, driven by religious extremism and foreign groups.

"Notorious terrorist group the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) was behind the fatal attack," the official news agency Xinhua reported, citing police.

China's top security official previously described ETIM as "behind-the-scenes supporters" of a deadly October attack on tourists in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Critics claim the threat posed by such groups is exaggerated to justify hard-line measures, and instead point to cultural and religious repression and resentment that economic development has mostly benefited an influx of ethnic Han.

On April 30, the final day of a visit by President Xi Jinping to the region, assailants armed with knives and explosives carried out an attack at a railway station in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi, killing one person and wounding 79.

The main plotter had formulated plans from abroad, then eight days before the incident ordered 10 people to make an explosive and choose a target, Xinhua said in a later report.

The two people who carried out the bombing died and the remaining eight have been arrested, it said.

Chinese police were working with Interpol to detain the plotter, who Xinhua said had "promoted extremist religious ideology and undertook illegal religious activities" for the past decade. He linked up with ETIM in 2012 and fled overseas last year because he was wanted by police.

A group named the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) released a video online showing the construction of a briefcase bomb allegedly used in the attack, the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors extremist organisations, said last Tuesday.

But in response to that, several analysts said they doubted whether the TIP had the ability to launch such attacks, suggesting that it could be looking to raise its profile.

Little is known about ETIM and TIP, and experts are divided over whether the two groups are part of the same organisation.

In recent months violence attributed to people from Xinjiang has spread beyond that region.

In March attackers went on a stabbing spree at a railway station in the southwestern city of Kunming, leaving 29 people dead and 143 injured in an incident dubbed "China's 9/11" by state media.

And in 2009 ethnic riots erupted in Urumqi between Uighurs and the country's majority Han Chinese, leaving 200 people dead and prompting a security crackdown.

Egypt court jails more than 160 Muslim Brotherhood supporters

CAIRO: An Egyptian court jailed more than 160 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to up to 15 years in prison on Sunday, pressing a crackdown on the Islamist group before a presidential election former army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is expected to win.

Defendants chanted "Down with military rule" as Judge Hassan Fareed handed down 10-year jail terms to 126 Brotherhood supporters accused of violence and membership of a terrorist group in one of the cases. A further 37 people received 15-year sentences in a second case related to an alleged attempt to blow up a Cairo metro station.

The security forces have detained thousands of Brotherhood supporters since the military deposed president Mohamed Mursi last July following mass protests against his rule.

Sisi, expected to easily win the May 26-27 vote, has signalled there will be no reconciliation with the Brotherhood.

Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie, who was among 683 people sentenced to death last month, made a rare address in court, rejecting the accusations levelled against his group.

"We have never responded to any attack against us with violence," said Badie, addressing the judge in footage uploaded to Youtube. The judiciary was being used in a political conflict the likes of which Egypt had never seen before, he said.

The government declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group after an upsurge in attacks on the police and army following Mursi's removal from power. Many of the attacks have been claimed by radical Islamist groups such as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis.

Mursi is one of many Brotherhood leaders now standing trial. He faces charges including conspiring with the Palestinian group Hamas against Egypt. Badie described that charge as "lies and falsehood".
