VADODARA: City police on Thursday detained Congress candidate against Narendra Modi, Madhusudan Mistry, and other party workers when they tried to paste his posters on his rival's banners at advertisement kiosks in Dandiya Bazaar area.

"Mistry and other Congress workers have been detained after they tried to paste his posters on an advertisement kiosk installed on electricity poll on road dividers," Vadodara DCP Dipankar Trivedi said.

Narendra Rawat, the earlier Congress candidate from Vadodara whose candidature was withdrawn after BJP declared that their prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi will fight from this Lok Sabha seat, and leader of opposition in Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC)'s Chandrakant Kastur were also detained along with Mistry and other party workers.

"Mistry or any other Congress leader has not taken any permission for the programme," said Trivedi, adding that further course of action will be decided after looking into the videography of the incident.

"Mistry tried to climb on one pole of road divider for pasting his poster over Narendra Modi's poster, but he was prevented by the police," a Congress worker said.

"Police also took away his ladder which was used to replace Modi's poster," he said further.

Congress workers shouted slogans against Modi and BJP party and alleged that he (Modi) was responsible for not allowing their party candidate to put up his posters.

Talking to PTI, Mistry alleged that police and district administration were acting in a partisan manner and prevented putting up of his posters at advertisements kiosks on city roads.

Mistry also said that when a policeman came to him, he demanded his identity card but the cop refused to show it.

Earlier, Mistry along with other Congress workers sat on a dharna at city Congress office in Dandiya Bazar area of Vadodara city.

Women workers of the party also alleged that they were beaten up by police and in the scuffle their "mangalsutras" were looted and their bangles were broken when they were being detained.

AAP ka baap Congress hai: Venkaiah Naidu

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 02 April 2014 | 08.21

INDORE: Terming Congress as the father of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), former national president of BJP Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said, "AAP ka baap Congress hai."

Alleging understanding between AAP and Congress, Naidu said Congress is in power for the last one decade, people are angry with it and every party is fighting against Congress in this election but Arvind Kejriwal is not ready to fight Congress as for him BJP is the main opponent just like Congress.

Naidu said when Kejriwal has formed his party it emerged as a new hope and alternate to Congress but in the last three months, especially after forming government in Delhi, with the support of Congress, AAP has lost its credential and acceptability among people. "Now people see BJP as only hope and party will get overwhelming support from people in the election," said Naidu. He said more party will come to NDA after election.

Taking a dig at Kerjirwal, he said media made him headline after Delhi election but soon he was sidelined due to his irresponsible acts. "Now Kejriwal is applying all tricks to become headline again, visiting Gujarat to contesting against Narendra Modi from Varanasi is his attempt to get media attention," said Naidu, adding that '' but now people of the country have made their mind and accepted Modi as a leader.''

Downplaying issue of Jawant Singh and alleged sideline of senior leaders, Naidu said party is united and there is no issue. "Jawant Singh was given a lot by the party, this time he was denied ticket. His resentment is unfortunate," said Naidu adding that the party has always respected senior leaders and will continue to do so.

However, Naidu accepted fault in admitting Sabir Ali, who was removed from BJP in less than 24 hours, said party has learnt a lesson. "Party should check the background of leader before admitting them in party," he said.

On acceptance of BJP among minority, Naidu said, "This is our weakness to not have adequate support from minority but it was only because of the atmosphere created by other parties. Things are changing now." In last Gujarat assembly election 35 per cent minority voted for BJP, similarly in recent assembly election in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan party got support from minority community.

"Now Congress has become untouchable and NDA will get support from few more parties after election," said Naidu.

Muslim quota, upper caste commission promised in SP manifesto

LUCKNOW: Seeking to woo Muslims as well as upper castes, Samajwadi Party on Wednesday promised quota in police and other government jobs for minority community, release of "innocent" youths jailed on terror charges and constitution of an upper caste commission in its manifesto brimming with sops.

Vowing to enact tough law against communal violence, the SP led by Mulayam Singh Yadav said it would ensure justice to 2002 Gujarat riot victims and implementation of recommendations of Srikrishna Commission.

Provisions for free education and healthcare will be made in the country if a non-Congress, non-BJP government of which SP is a part is formed at the Centre after the Lok Sabha polls, the party, which is in power in Uttar Pradesh, said.

"The party will constitute a commission on lines of women, minorities and others commissions for problems pertaining to Upper Caste. The party will also make amendment in Constitution for providing reservation to Muslims on basis of their population in government jobs and give them 15 per cent reservation in police and PAC," Mulayam said while releasing the party's 24-page manifesto.

"The party will include 17 backward castes in the SC category if voted to power," he said.

The manifesto also promised to release "innocent" Muslim youths lodged in jail on terrorism charges.

He also promised to curb corruption and bring back black money from foreign banks.

Party National General Secretary Ramgopal Yadav said if SP is voted to power, it would make education free from primary to higher level.

"We will do this by increasing expenditure in education. Presently four per cent of the GDP is spent on education and we will increase it to seven per cent for making education free," Ramgopal said.

For service class, SP manifesto promises increasing the retirement age to 65 years for government employees, judges of higher and lower courts and teachers and other employees of educational institutes.

Priority will be given to Agriculture sector, Mulayam said, adding his government would ensure that the "ignored" sector is given due weightage.

"Only a country, where agriculture is promoted can make progress. China's economy became better than India due to agriculture sector," he said.

Highlighting the steps to be taken in the health sector, the SP supremo said that mini AIIMs would be opened in rural areas and facilities like x-ray, MRI, CT-scan and pathological tests would be made "free for the poor".

"The government will also provide free treatment for kidney, heart, liver, and other diseases including cancer", he said.

Alleging that MNREGA, mid-day meal and nutrition schemes were mired in corruption, he said, "there are scams all over in implementation of this scheme. Somewhere there is small scam and in other place there is big sca...We will change the system".

On Naxal problem, Ramgopal said "genuine demands should be accepted instead of using force against them".

Country could face communal violence if Modi become PM, Mayawati says

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 01 April 2014 | 08.21

JAMMU: BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday said if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister "even by mistake", the country could face communal violence which will destroy the nation.

"If such a person (Modi) for any reason and by mistake becomes Prime Minister, the country could any time face communal clashes which would result in damage and destruction of the nation," Mayawati said while addressing a public rally at Parade-ground here.

Mayawati, who arrived late by three hours at the rally to campaign for his party candidates for Jammu Lok Sabha constituency Ashok Kumar and Dharam Pal Balgotra (for Udhampur Lok Sabha seat), asked the people to "stop them (Modi and BJP) from coming to power at the Centre".

The former UP chief minister also attacked BJP for fielding Modi as PM nominee saying, BJP has named a person as its prime ministerial candidate during whose regime communal clashes broke out in Gujarat in 2002.

Making an appeal to people to not to vote for Congress, Mayawati said that Congress has not named Rahul Gandhi as its PM candidate but was contesting Lok Sabha elections with the sole aim to make him as the Prime Minister.

"You have also to stop Congress from coming to power at the Centre as Congress during past over 60 years of rule has done nothing good for the people of the country. Their governments have failed on all the fronts," she said.

Mayawati asked the people to be cautious and not to fall into the trap of vote bank. She also asked them not be misled by the propaganda and projections by various political leaders about their future strategies.

BSP chief said that people should also be aware about the manifesto of various political parties who would try to lure by making promises "but these parties, with their governments at the Centre and at the states, have failed implement even 50 per cent of what they had promised".

Questioning Modi's claim of betterment in overall situation of the country after BJP comes to the power, she said, "We would like to know from Modi about the changes his party had brought when they were in power for six years."

She said why his party could not improve the country's deteriorating situation during its six-year rule. "BJP leaders failed to give answers to our questions in this regard".

Clarifying her party's decision not to release election manifesto, she said we do not release any election manifesto because our party believes in performing at the grass root level than issuing mere slogans on papers and UP is the biggest proof of this.

She also attacked Congress for failing to bring the black money stashed abroad back.

Taking at dig at UPA government, she said that new anti-corruption laws were formed but they were not effectively implemented to weed out corruption.

Kejriwal's roadshow in Delhi's Chandni Chowk attracts huge crowd

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal's roadshow in Britannia chowk area of Chandni Chowk constituency, nine days ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, drew enthusiastic crowd which had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Aam Aadmi Party chief.

As the convoy of more than 20 cars passed through the lanes and bylanes of the congested area, residents peered out from the roofs and windows of their houses waving and cheering for the former Delhi chief minister.

However, the roadshow disrupted traffic which left commuters reeling under chaos on a weekday and passerbys had a tough time reaching their destinations.

The convoy was led by an open jeep in which Kejriwal along with AAP's Chandni Chowk constituency candidate Ashutosh waved to the crowd and also shook hands with some residents.

Many residents who moved along with the convoy even garlanded Kejriwal as he moved ahead.

"We will vote for Kejriwal. He has a clean image and he deserves a chance," said 62-year-old Rishi Kumar.

Kick-starting the roadshow from Britannia chowk near Samraat Cinema hall amid extensive police deployment, Kejriwal's cavalcade passed through thickly populated areas such as A-Block Mother Diary and Saraswati Chowk and urged people vote for the journalist-turned-politician, Ashutosh.

Kejriwal held the BJP and Congress responsible for ceasing off the subsidy on water and electricity which he had offered when in power and said he will start the subsidy if he gets to power.

Armed pro-govt militias try to disrupt Venezuela protests

VALENCIA (Venezuela): Masked gunmen emerged from a group of several dozen motorcycle-mounted government loyalists and attempted to dismantle a barricade in La Isabelica, a working-class district of Valencia that has been a center of unrest since nationwide protests broke out last month.

The barricades' defenders had been hurling rocks, sticks and other objects at the attackers, who included perhaps a dozen armed men, witnesses told Associated Press.

Lisandro Barazarte, a photographer with the local newspaper, Notitarde, caught images of several of the men shooting into the crowd while steadying their firearms on their palms.

"They were practiced shooters," Barazarte said. "More were armed, but didn't fire."

When it was over, two La Isabelica men were dead: a 22-year-old student, Jesus Enrique Acosta, and a little league baseball coach, Guillermo Sanchez. Witnesses told the AP the first was shot in the head, the second in the back. They said neither was at the barricades when he was killed.

Similar shootings across Venezuela by gunmen allied with the socialist-led government have claimed at least seven lives and left more than 30 people wounded since the anti-government protests began in mid-February.

President Nicolas Maduro has done nothing to publicly discourage the violence by armed pro-government militants, loosely known as "colectivos," which are also blamed for scores more cases of beatings and intimidation in multiple cities. That includes a March 19 incursion into the architecture academy at the Central University of Venezuela in the capital in which some 40 masked men and women identifying themselves as government defenders bloodied at least a dozen students.

In fact, since the protests began, Maduro and his vice president have each welcomed pro-government "motorizados," or motorcyclists, to separate events at the presidential palace — a February 24 rally and a "peace conference" on March 13.

At the latter gathering, Vice-President Jorge Arreaza told his guests, "If there has been exemplary behavior it has been the behavior of the motorcycle colectivos that are with the Bolivarian revolution." He claimed the CIA was behind a propaganda campaign to discredit the colectivos.

Maduro has blamed the violence on the other side, telling supporters on March 9, "There are violent armed groups in the streets, and they are all from the right."

Colectivos have long been a fixture in poorer neighborhoods that became strongholds of the late president Hugo Chavez during his 14-year reign. They organize cultural events and community services such as youth summer camps but have also included armed motorcycle-riding militants who have long menaced opposition activists, blocking their marches and roughing up peaceful protesters.

Those violent tactics escalated when anti-government protests surged in mid-February. Fatalities since blamed on colectivo aggression have mostly involved university students, including a prominent student leader, Daniel Tinoco, shot in the chest March 10 in the western city of San Cristobal, where the unrest began amid student outrage at alleged police indifference to an attempted sexual assault.

Most were manning barricades, as were the two students in the western city of Barquisimeto wounded the following day by gunmen who pierced their university's perimeter and set fire to several cars inside.

During the attack in La Isabelica in Valencia, Acosta was hit by a bullet while he was inside an apartment with a friend near the barricades. Sanchez, 42, was out walking to buy a paint brush when the bullet that claimed his life tore into his lower torso.

One of Sanchez's neighbors, who spoke on condition he not be identified for fear of retribution, said the pro-government gang grabbed the wounded Sanchez and dragged him down the street, beating him.

"The police never came. There was no (National) Guard," the neighbor said. "It was the Wild West."

Daniel Wilkinson, managing director for the Americas for the US-based group Human Rights Watch, said such colectivo violence is nationwide.

"This is just one example of a practice we've seen across several states, of security forces not only tolerating armed groups of civilians who attack peaceful protesters, but even collaborating with these gangs when they commit beatings, arbitrary arrests and other abuses," Wilkinson said.

Video and still images chronicling apparent colectivo abuse, mostly shot by private citizens, have been widely posted on social networks in a country where, according to international press freedom groups, independent journalism has been under steady government assault for years.

In many images, the gunmen are seen menacing people and removing barricades set up by protesters as police and National Guardsmen stand idly by.

US secretary of state John Kerry last month accused the Maduro government of wielding "armed vigilantes" against peaceful protesters, and the European Parliament passed a resolution on Feb. 27 calling on the government to "immediately disarm and dissolve the uncontrolled armed pro-government groups and end their impunity."

Spokesmen for Venezuela's colectivos deny perpetrating anti-opposition violence.

"No one has been able to offer proof (of abuses) because they don't have them," said Jose Pinto, secretary general of one of the biggest colectivos, the Tupamaros, which has been around since the 1970s. "Our only weapon is our conscience."

Such groups gained strength and multiplied under Chavez, with the Tupamaros becoming a political party after a failed 2002 coup attempt against the government.

Pinto denied that members of his group are armed and said the opposition simply fears the Tupamaros because the organization is growing stronger politically, winning two mayors' offices and 63 city council seats in December municipal elections.

Antonio Gonzalez, a sociologist and former university vice rector who advised a government committee that studied disarming loyalist vigilantes, said armed leftist militant groups have existed for some four decades but are marginal in influence and are being used by the opposition as a scapegoat.

"It's the perfect excuse to discredit the masses and Chavista organizations as violent," he said.

An attorney who has studied the groups as part of a commission formed by the MUD opposition alliance disputed that characterization.

Armed colectivos exist in at least 110 of the country's 1,136 communities, according to the attorney, Fermin Marmol Garcia. Their members were "at one point municipal or national police officers and who also may have at one point served in the military."

Some have day jobs in the government, working as bodyguards for top officials, said Alejandro Velasco, a New York University assistant professor who spent a year and a half from 2004-2005 living in the Caracas colectivo stronghold of 23 de Enero. He estimated that in the entire district of 150,000 residents about 500 people were involved with colectivos.

They identify themselves, said Marmol Garcia, as "guardians of the revolution" and are sometimes involved in resolving disputes in their barrios or in protecting small businesses.

Opposition leaders have been complaining about them for years and Maduro himself presided over a ceremony last August in the 23 de Enero district in which 100 firearms were destroyed, according to the official newspaper Correo del Orinoco.

Yet a week into the protest wave, Maduro said his government would not accept "the campaign to demonize Venezuelan colectivos," which he said "have organized to protect their communities."

That's certainly not what the masked attackers who identified themselves as colectivos were doing when they corralled about 40 male and female architecture students in a first-floor hall at the Central University of Venezuela for nearly an hour on March 19, ordering them at gunpoint to disrobe and robbing them of their belongings.

"They put a pistol in my face and said they were going to kill me," said Jhonny Medrano, a 21-year-old student, describing how he and several classmates were beaten with sticks, pipes and pistols by the attackers, whom he quoted as saying, "We are the ones who are defending the government. We are Chavez. We are Maduro."

The students said they were made to walk through a line of attackers, some of whom wore university firefighters uniforms, while they were beaten. As they left, the attackers filled the building with tear gas.

"This can't keep happening," architecture professor Hernan Zamora told the AP, crying inconsolably as he recalled the terror he felt. "This can't keep happening."

Country could face communal violence if Modi become PM, Mayawati says

Mine mafia running government in Odisha: Rahul Gandhi

KORAPUT (Odisha): Accusing the BJD government in Odisha of hijacking the credit for the work done through the welfare programmes of UPA government, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday claimed the state is ruled by "mine mafia" and not by the people's representatives.

"The state government is run by the mine mafia and not by leaders. Valuable minerals worth thousands of crore rupees are looted and state government is aware about it," Gandhi alleged at a public meeting at Semiliguda in the tribal-dominated Koraput district.

"Though the Centre sends thousands of crores for the welfare of tribals, the amount is not reaching the beneficiaries at the village level. The state government is diverting central funds and taking credit without any justification," he said.

While a handful of mafia loot mineral resources of Odisha and become rich, the poor and tribal people do not get any benefit, Gandhi said.

In contrast, the Centre has set up a large number of institutes, medical colleges and hospitals for the betterment of the people, he said.

Highlighting the Congress party's concern for the poor and tribal people, Rahul Gandhi said his family had long-standing bond with the tribals and "I love to be in the midst of tribal people."

Recalling that Rajiv Gandhi had also visited the area, Gandhi said he would continue to fight for the cause of tribals

The Congress vice-president claimed that it was he who stood by the agitating tribals of Kalahandi and saved Niyamgiri Hills.

Strongly opposing displacement of people for various projects without offering adequate compensation, Gandhi said Congress would strive for safeguarding the interests of the poor and underprivileged.

Hitting out at the state government, Rahul accused it of being insensitive towards the poor and said it was unfortunate that Food Security Act was not implemented in the state.

He also raised corruption issues like chit fund scam and alleged that the ruling BJD leaders were behind the ponzi companies which duped the poor and innocent investors in the state.

Congress, BJP luring actors for Lok Sabha polls, Akhilesh Yadav says

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Maret 2014 | 08.20

GHAZIABAD: The Congress and the BJP are facing a crisis of contestants as big leaders are shying away from the Lok Sabha polls to escape humiliation. That is why both parties are luring film actors, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said here Sunday.

Without naming the Congress candidate for Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat -- film star-turned-politician Raj Babbar, Akhilesh said it was the same leader who was instrumental along with former prime minister V.P. Singh in obstructing the construction of a power project in Dadri.

"If this man had not created snags in the power project, it could have come into existence to solve the power shortage and the city would have flourished," the Samajwadi Party leader said.

"Now the same man is crying for development. He always ditched voters. Ghaziabad residents would teach him a lesson," he said.

Hitting out at Rajnath Singh, Akhilesh said the Bharatiya Janata Party president left the city in fear of defeat.

Targetting BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he said: "The Gujarat model is a technique to mislead the masses like 'India Shining'. If the Gujarat model would have been true in existence, why did Modi opt to contest from Varanasi? He does not feel safe to contest from one place."

He said the BJP was an expert in spreading communalism, and it was the party that had ignited the violence in Muzaffarnagar.

He said his government effectively controlled the situation and restored peace. The Supreme Court has appreciated the role of the state government in controlling the violence.

On his government's achievements, the chief minister said it has regularised the jobs of 1.6 lakh state employees, sanctioned unemployment fund, distributed 15 lakh laptops and sanctioned funds for the extension of Delhi Metro rail project in Ghaziabad.

Cong equally responsible for trust deficit between people of J&K and rest of country: Mufti

JAMMU: Emphasizing on the need of formulating a long term policy to solve all problems of Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said Congress is equally responsible for prevailing trust-deficit between people of the state and rest of the country.

"Like National Conference (NC), leadership of Congress is also equally responsible for prevailing anarchy, chaos and sense of uncertainty in the state," PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said at a public meeting at Khanpur area of Nagrota Assembly segment in support of party nominee Yash Pal Sharma.

Mufti reminded the gathering that it is a historical fact that whenever Congress has entered into alliance with NC, the state of Jammu and Kashmir plunged into unprecedented crisis and their alliance always proved ominous for the people of the region.

"It is a coincidence that whenever both these parties shared power, alienation of people increased and faith of the masses in the system was badly shattered," he said and added that like their previous experiments for enjoying power, the present NC-Congress coalition has also proved disastrous for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

"Coalition has been exposed due to its misdeed, mis-governance and mal-administration so people are looking towards PDP to get rid of the present anarchist dispensation," the Mufti said.

"PDP-led coalition regime had laid the foundation of mutual trust and confidence among inhabitants of different regions of the state," he said.

Earlier addressing a meeting of Kashmiri Pandits in support of party candidate Mehbooba Mufti, he said his party promised to facilitate honourable return of Kashmiri Pandit migrants to their native places and sought support and cooperation of the community to change the present system.
