Kerala asks CBI to probe RSS activist murder case

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 06 September 2014 | 08.21

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress-led UDF government in Kerala on Saturday said it has decided to hand over to CBI the investigation into the recent murder of RSS leader Manoj, allegedly by CPM workers in Kannur district.

Announcing the decision at a press meet here, state home minister Ramesh Chennithala said a notification in this regard would be issued soon.

Describing the murder as a heinous crime, Chennithala said the decision was taken based on the state DGP's recommendation which stated that the case has a wider conspiracy angle.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy had in a letter yesterday informed Union home minister Rajnath Singh that all accused in the murder have been arrested and produced before a court.

On September 2, Singh had a telephonic conversation with Chandy and had expressed concern over the killings of political and social activists in the state.

The home minister had asked Chandy to take strict action to stop such political killings.

Quoting the DGP's report, Chennithala said the culprits' foreign and outside the state connection also could not ruled out.

The state BJP leaders had submitted a memorandum to chief minister Oommen Chandy seeking a CBI probe into the murder.

Manoj, a district functionary of the RSS, was hacked to death by an unidentified gang on September 1. The killing shocked the Sangh outfits as it happened on a day when BJP president Amit Shah was in Thiruvanathapuram.

RSS-BJP leaders alleged that the CPI(M) was behind the killing and gave a call for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the state on September 2.

Southwest China floods kill 44, leave 18 missing

BEIJING: Flooding in southwestern China over the past week has left 44 people dead and 18 missing, and has caused massive damage to housing and crops, the Civil Affairs ministry said on Saturday.

Constant heavy rain beginning August 31 has caused widespread destruction in Sichuan and Guizhou provinces, as well as the mega-city of Chongqing, where all but one of the deaths occurred and all of the missing were reported.

The ministry said 121,700 people had been moved to temporary shelters and put the number of collapsed or heavily damaged houses at 42,000. It estimated total damage at more than 3.3 billion yuan ($534 million).

Southwestern China's mountainous terrain increases the chances of landslides brought on by the loosening of rain-saturated hillsides.

Seasonal rains cause major flooding around China almost every year. The worst in recent history was in 1998, when 4,150 people died, most of them along the Yangtze River, China's mightiest.

The massive Three Gorges Dam has largely contained Yangtze flooding, but the problem persists in other parts of the country apart from the arid northwest.

Sikh man gunned down in northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A 28-year-old Sikh man was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, the second member from the minority community to be killed in the country in past two days.

Harjeet Singh, who owns a grocery shop, was attacked by motorcycle-borne gunmen outside his shop in the congested Nothia Bazaar.

The man died on the spot and his attackers, who have not yet been identified, managed to flee the area, Dawn online reported.

Riaz Ali Shah, SHO at Gulberg Police Station, said the trader was a resident of Dabgari.

Police is investigating the circumstances around the incident and motive of the attackers.

On Thursday, another Sikh man was stabbed to death by unidentified attackers in northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

On August 6, members of Peshawar's Sikh community had come under attack with one killed and two injured in a firing incident.

Last month's attack had led to protests by members of the community who have demanded protection from the government.

Minorities in Muslim-majority Pakistan make up some two per cent of the country's population of 180 million.

Pakistan has witnessed violence against religious minorities in recent days as al-Qaida and Taliban-led militants regularly target Christian, Sikhs, Hindus, Ahmadi and Shia communities in the country.

Bombay HC gives time to Maharashtra govt to reply to sisters’ plea on death row

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has granted further two weeks' time to Maharashtra government to file an affidavit in reply to a petition filed by two sisters urging that their death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment.

The mercy petitions of Renuka Shinde and Seema Gavit, who were sentenced to death in 2001 for kidnapping 13 children and killing nine of them between 1990 and October 1996, were rejected by the President recently.

The apex court had earlier upheld death for the duo. However, being aggrieved, they moved the high court seeking reduction of punishment to life imprisonment.

Hearing their petition, Justice VM Kanade and Justice PD Kode had earlier given two weeks' time to the government to file its reply. However, when the matter came up for hearing on Friday, the state urged the judges to grant further two weeks and the court allowed its plea.

The two sisters, hailing from Kolhapur, contended that the President had taken more than five years to decide their mercy petitions when such a plea should have been disposed of within three months. On this ground alone, their death sentence may be commuted to life term, the duo prayed.

The two sisters were assisted in the crime by their mother Anjana Gavit and Renuka's husband Kiran Shinde. Anjana died in custody while Kiran turned an approver.

They used to force children to beg, commit petty thefts and pick pockets. The children were starved to force them to commit crimes. After having sufficiently used the children in crime, they banged their head against walls and killed them.

The sisters, who could be the first women convicts to be sent to the gallows since Independence, are currently lodged in Pune's Yerawada prison and were recently informed about the President's decision to reject their mercy petitions.

The 14-day buffer period before execution expired on August 16, according to their lawyer Sudeep Jaiswal.

"The extraordinary and unjustified delay in execution of death sentence has caused immense mental torture, emotional and physical agony to us. Since we have suffered immensely, in the interest of justice and good conscience, death sentence may be commuted to life imprisonment," they pleaded.

US sending 200 troops for drills in Ukraine: Pentagon

WASHINGTON: The United States will send about 200 troops to take part in a US-led annual exercise in Ukraine later this month, the Pentagon said on Wednesday, in a show of solidarity with Kiev.

The presence of 200 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade will mark the first deployment of US ground troops to Ukraine since the Kiev government's conflict with pro-Russia separatists erupted earlier this year.

Dubbed "Rapid Trident," the yearly exercise was set for September 13-26 and will involve more than a dozen countries, including "approximately 200 personnel" from the US military, spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said.

"It's a peacekeeping exercise," said Warren, and would focus in part on countering homemade bombs.

The drill was due to be held in Yavoriv, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) from Lviv in western Ukraine.

US naval forces also were due to take part in a separate maritime exercise starting next week in the Black Sea which will involve forces from Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia and Romania, officials said.

Two vessels from a NATO maritime group will also participate. Washington is sending the USS Ross, a guided missile destroyer, to join the naval drill, dubbed "Sea Breeze," which runs from Monday to Wednesday. About 280 US sailors were due to take part.

The aim of the exercise was "to improve interoperability while promoting regional stability and security" among allies and partners, spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Vanessa Hillman said.

With Russia's intervention in Ukraine raising alarm in Eastern Europe and beyond, the United States has held a series of high-profile military exercises in the region in a bid to reassure anxious allies on NATO's eastern border.

Ukraine, facing a separatist rebellion and suspected Russian military operations in its east, has asked for US military aid but Washington has declined so far to provide weapons to the Kiev government.

Canadians held Americans hostage in Syria: Report

OTTAWA: Three Canadians were directly involved in the kidnapping of two American journalists by Islamist militants in Sryria, Canada's public broadcaster reported on Wednesday.

Citing unnamed sources, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said the trio — whose identities are unknown — forced captives Theo Curtis and Matt Schrier to reveal their computer passwords, then drained their bank accounts and racked up credit card bills.

They also wrote to the two journalists' families pretending to be the men, the CBC said. The Canadian government said it is investigating.

Curtis and Schrier were held in captivity together between 2012 and 2013. Curtis was released by the al-Qaida affiliated Al-Nusra Front last month while Schrier escaped last year.

Ottawa has said as many as 130 Canadians are fighting overseas with extremist groups. Some estimates put the figure much higher.

Gay group to march openly in Saint Patrick's Day Parade in New York

NEW YORK: Organizers of the New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade said on Wednesday they will allow a gay group to march under its own banner in the 2015 procession, changing a decades-old policy that has come under criticism in recent years.

The group that will be allowed to walk under its own sign Out@NBCUniversal, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) support group associated with WNBC-TV, the longtime broadcast partner of the nationally televised event, scheduled for next March 17.

Controversy over the ban had led to lawsuits and boycotts. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio refused to march in this year's parade. Two big sponsors, brewers Guinness and Heineken, yanked their sponsorship due to the ban.

Gay groups have been allowed in the city's largest St. Patrick's Day parade provided they did not display banners, flags and pins that identified sexual orientation.

The NBC-affiliated group will be the only one allowed to hoist its banner in 2015 and others can apply to march in the 2016 event, said parade spokesman William O'Reilly in an email statement.

The parade committee said the new policy was aimed at welcoming lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups while staying true to the teachings of the Catholic Church as the parade moves into its 253rd year.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Roman Catholic archbishop of New York, expressed support for the parade committee, saying he hopes "the parade would continue to be a source of unity for all of us."

Some gay advocates cheered the change, including GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis, who said on the group's website: "It's about time."

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito also applauded the policy change.

"For far too long, the St. Patrick's Day Parade excluded New Yorkers just because of who they to love. I am happy organizers finally realized that this parade is better when all are invited," she said.

Others, such as Irish Queers, were skeptical. "Our call remains the same - the parade must be open to Irish LGBT groups, not 'in subsequent years' but now," the group said.

The mayor said that this was a "step forward" but perhaps not enough to join the 2015 parade. "I need to know more before I can tell you how we're going to handle something six months from now," he told reporters.

Flight path of Japanese PM's plane published online

TOKYO: Japan government admitted on Thursday that details about the flight path and exact location of the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plane had been posted online for anyone to see.

In a breach the defence ministry hurried to fix, Flightradar 24, a website and mobile app that enables users to track air traffic around the world, had been carrying details of Shinzo Abe's official flights as he travelled abroad.

The defence ministry, which is in charge of the official planes, does not normally disclose details of such flights for security concerns.

But Japan's biggest-selling daily, the Yomiuri Shimbun, noted the realtime coordinates and altitude of Japanese Air Force One and Two — the two planes always fly together — were available online.

"The ministry asked the company to make the change on August 8 and confirmed the firm took action on August 27," a ministry spokesman told AFP.

"We don't consider it would have seriously affected the safety of official flights, but it was not preferable that undisclosed information was made openly available to the public," he added.

Using Flightradar 24, which processes data sent from aircraft, anyone on a smartphone or computer was able to see where Japan's official planes, which carry the premier as well as the emperor and empress, was going.

Indian engineering exports to Iran, Turkey, Jordan see big jump: Report

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 03 September 2014 | 08.21

Udit Prasanna Mukherji, TNN | Sep 3, 2014, 07.27PM IST
KOLKATA: They share the borders with Iraq, the most troublesome spot in West Asia, but Iran, Turkey and Jordan have given remarkable year-on-year growth ranging from 100 to 150 per cent to India's engineering exports in July, 2014 giving a pleasant surprise to the exporters, an EEPC India data has shown.

While the northern parts of Iraq and Syria have turned into war zones, the bordering Turkey on the North has witnessed 89 per cent expansion in engineering exports from India to $155 million in July, 2014 from $82 million a year ago. Likewise, for the April-July period of four months, the engineering goods exports to Turkey have grown by 106 per cent to $638 million from $309 million in the comparable months of the previous fiscal, EEPC India analysis has shown.

"Fortunately, Turkish economy has not been affected by the war in the northern Iraq and Syria. Turkey has been one of the impressive emerging market economies pursuing with reforms. Likewise, though there is a low base of trade with Iran and Jordan we have witnessed a big growth in the recent months," Anupam Shah, chairman of the EEPC India, formerly the Engineering Export Promotion Council said.

The surprise pack in the region has come from Jordan that shares its northern border with Syria and north-eastern border with Iraq.

Shipments to Jordan in July this year increased to $11 million by 67.5 per cent from $6.59 million in the same month of the fiscal 2013-14.

The performance in the earlier months of the current fiscal was even more pronounced as is reflected in the cumulative data of April-July, 2014. For this period, engineering exports to Jordan went up by 1150 per cent to $340 million from a mere $27 million in the corresponding months of the previous year.

Notably Iran, with which trade could not been done in a smooth manner earlier because of the US sanctions, is now giving a big market to Indian engineering exporters. The consignments to that country which too shares its larger border — from north west to south west — have also seen a big jump of over 100 per cent year-on-year for the April-July period. For standalone July, the shipments were a large increase of 240 per cent to $177 million from $52 million in the previous year.

"The West Asia as a whole has been giving us good demand along with the European countries, though some key European nations are still grappling with slowdown," Shah said.

Finalize seat sharing by September 10, Republican Party of India tells Shiv Sena-BJP

MUMBAI: In an indication of tension in the BJP and Shiv Sena-led opposition alliance 'Mahayuti' in Maharashtra, Ramdas Athawale's RPI (A) on Wednesday demanded clarity on seat-sharing, saying that it would reconsider its decision to be a part of the alliance otherwise.

"We have long been demanding that BJP and Shiv Sena should give at least 14-15 seats to us for the assembly. But there has been a complete stalemate over the seat-sharing. If there is no final decision by September 10, we will be forced to reconsider our decision to be a part of Mahayuti," said Arjun Dangle, state spokesperson of RPI, here.

The saffron alliance, which put up a robust show in the Lok Sabha election — winning 42 of the 48 constituencies — is yet to seal the seat-sharing pact for the 288-member assembly, amid reports of differences between Sena and BJP.

Dangle added that there had been "discontent" among the party workers over the "lax attitude" of BJP-Sena with regard to seat-sharing, and final decision on future course of action will be taken at RPI's state executive meet on September 10.

"We have only demanded seats where we can field strong contenders. Our workers need time to prepare themselves for the elections," Dangle added.

Asked about reports that RPI may get only five seats, Dangle said the party will not settle for anything less than 14-15 seats and he "hoped" that BJP and Sena will give it the respect it deserves.

International Air Transport Association praises NDA as domestic air travel grows

Saurabh Sinha, TNN | Sep 3, 2014, 06.21PM IST
NEW DELHI: It's a 100-day endorsement from a quarter that the Modi government would have least expected. Geneva-based International Air Transport Association (IATA) has praised the NDA's business-friendly approach that has improved the overall sentiment and led to an increase in domestic air travel — something that had been nosediving in India in past few years.

"India's domestic market increased by a solid 6% in July over the previous year. This could be an early sign of the success of the new government's business-friendly stance," IATA said Wednesday while announcing the global passenger traffic results for July.

The global body, however, had a muted response to NDA's first budget. "However, the government's July budget announcement showed little spending stimulus which could keep India's growth trend below the pace of other emerging markets," IATA said.

India's 6% growth made it the third fastest growing market in July when average global was 4.9%. The strongest growth was recorded in Russia at 9.9%, followed by China at 8.8%

"July was another strong month of growth for air travel. People are connecting by air in ever greater numbers. That's true across all regions. Despite the various economic challenges, the outlook for passenger travel remains broadly positive. The overall sluggishness at the beginning of the year appears to be behind us with growth in China and other emerging economies offsetting recent deterioration in the Eurozone," said IATA CEO Tony Tyler.

July international passenger demand rose by 5.5% compared to the same month in 2013. This was outstripped by a capacity expansion of 6.2% which resulted in a slight weakening of the load factor to 81.9% (down 0.5 percentage points from the year-ago period, but still at a very high level).

Britain joins US on frontlines after beheading video

LONDON: Britain joined the United States on the frontline against the Islamic State on Wednesday after a British hostage's life was threatened in a gruesome video, with the government saying it would not rule out taking part in air strikes if necessary.

"I can assure you that we will look at every possible option to protect this person," foreign secretary Philip Hammond said after an emergency government meeting held on the eve of a two-day summit of NATO leaders in Wales.

Cameron chaired the meeting, which was called after the release on Tuesday of a video showing the execution of a second US journalist by Islamist fighters in Iraq.

"A country like ours will not be cowed," Cameron said, adding: "We will not waver in our aim of defeating terrorism".

In a video showing the severed head of 31-year-old Steven Sotloff, a masked militant warned that a British man, widely identified as David Cawthorne Haines, would be killed in response to US air strikes against militants in northern Iraq.

Britain and the US have both authenticated the recording.

The militant spoke English with a British accent similar to that of the alleged killer of journalist James Foley in a video released by Islamic State extremists last month.

"We will look very carefully at the options available to us to support the legitimate government of Iraq and Kurdistan in defending themselves," Hammond said.

"If we judge that air strikes could be beneficial, could be the best way to do that, then we will certainly consider them but we have made no decision to do so at the moment.

"We have to deal with ISIS on the basis of the wider threat that they pose to the British public as well as this individual," he said.

- Fighters 'speak for no religion' -

Speaking on Tuesday, Cameron condemned Sotloff's beheading as "a despicable and barbaric murder".

"ISIL terrorists speak for no religion," Cameron said.

Britain has so far not joined in US air strikes against the Islamist fighters, but has helped arm Kurds fighting in northern Iraq and has dropped aid to people surrounded by IS fighters on Mount Sinjar and in the town of Amerli.

Earlier this week, however, Cameron implied he could order air strikes without prior approval from parliament -- something the government failed to get last year when it was considering retaliation for the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Cameron said he would keep parliament "permanently updated".

"If, however, something needed to be done urgently to protect a particular British national interest or to prevent some humanitarian catastrophe, it might be necessary to act and then come to parliament," he said on Monday.

"We have to make a judgment about how we best help those on the ground, and to date that judgment has been to provide aid and political support and to help with certain military aspects.

"The Americans have gone further and provided air strikes. I think that is the right way to approach this problem," he said.

6-magnitude earthquake jolts northern Pakistan

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 31 Agustus 2014 | 08.20

PESHAWAR: A 6-magnitude earthquake struck northern Pakistan on Sunday, authorities said, though there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Pakistan Meteorological Department official Mohammad Shahid said people felt the quake in Peshawar and Islamabad. He said its epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountains on the country's border with Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The US Geological Survey described the temblor as a magnitude-5.1 quake that struck in Afghanistan, some 280 kilometers (170 miles) northeast of the capital, Kabul. Such conflicting data is common immediately after an earthquake.

Pakistan and the region, along an active continental plate boundary, is often hit by earthquakes. In September 2013, a magnitude-7.7 quake struck Pakistan's Baluchistan province, killing at least 376 people.

Migrant boat carrying 100 capsizes off Libya

TRIPOLI, Libya: A Libyan coast guard official said a boat carrying more than 100 migrants capsized off the coast near the capital.

Abdel-Latif Mohammed said that the coast guard found the damaged rubber boat early Sunday off the shores of al-Qarbouli, 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Tripoli. The coast guard has not yet confirmed the number of deaths but estimated the boat carried at least 100 people.

Last week at least 100 African migrants, including five children, drowned in the same area.

Libya has grown increasingly lawless since the 2011 overthrow of dictator Moammar Gadhafi, making it a migration hub for sub-Saharan Africans seeking a better life. Scores are killed every year on the dangerous journey to Europe.
