Blog: 17 commandments for Modi

Let me forewarn: this is not going to be pretty. After the Delhi loss, there are plenty of articles on what BJP did wrong. While that has been well understood, it is important to note what it will take now to get out of this mess.

Here is a list of 17 action points if BJP wants to remain the dominant political party in India. After a long time, we have had a stable mandate at the top. If BJP blows this opportunity it will set India back by a decade. So, here goes.

Realise the Delhi election loss was a pure, unmitigated disaster. It has ended the halo around Modi, or the Modi wave. It has also shown the top leadership has no clue about the feelings of people on the street or their own party workers. It also casts doubt on Modi's actual execution ability.

The PM, with all due respect, is floating too high. Come back to earth. Don't try to present an image of a global statesman. You have won an anti-incumbency election when Congress was weak, by increasing BJP's vote share by a few percentage points. You have not transformed India yet. Don't go to Fiji. (Sorry Fiji, just that we have more important issues here.)

Don't just get claps from NRIs. If they love you so much, ask them to pay. If one lakh NRIs commit to paying BJP $1,000 a year, that is a hundred million dollars of clean money annually. Use that to clean up BJP's funding. When are you going to do that anyway?

Get the Lokpal. Have a good, independent CBI and CVC office. Clean up corruption systemically. Don't say if Modi is there, nobody can be corrupt. What if Modi isn't there tomorrow?

Don't bully the media or juniors in the party. Inspire respect, not fear. Don't be smug. Don't kill talent in the party because it could be a threat to you one day. It's not in BJP's DNA to be a one-man party.

Shut up regressive Hindutva fanatics. They talk. You ignore. They are your supporters. You have to tell them loud and clear this is not OK. The young generation doesn't find it cool to support a leader who doesn't believe in a free and equal society. Send some of your old-fashioned partymen abroad to learn about gender issues and minority rights. They will make you sink otherwise.

Don't be overconfident in your speeches. Keep a circle of critics around you, not just those who keep singing 'Modiji is awesome'. Everything you utter in public must be pre-checked. If you did that, the Naxal and Bazaru comments would have been edited out. A PM cannot be a rabble rouser.

Dress down. Charisma comes from integrity, competence and compassion. Not from expensive clothes.

Stay connected to and do something visible for the youth. They screamed for you in the Lok Sabha election, filled their twitter and FB walls in your praise. What have you done for them? You went to SRCC to give a speech before election. Have you visited any college after that? Why not? Is Fiji more important (sorry again Fiji)?

The party president may be really clever. But sometimes it isn't about who is most clever but who genuinely cares. Chess moves don't win elections all the time. A connect with people does. The party president, given his perceived persona (which may be at variance with who he really is), doesn't inspire confidence. You
standing next to him is Amitabh Bachchan standing next to Amar Singh. Did it help Mr Bachchan?

Don't talk down to people. Talk to people. Don't address people if you never want to take questions. Don't give monologues on radio. It reminds one of Indira Gandhi and North Korea. It's not cool. Do you really think a kid in Delhi University will tell his friends, hey, can't miss that Mann Ki Baat on radio?

Open more colleges. Open up tourism. Reduce taxes on high employment sectors. Give tax breaks for companies that move headquarters to smaller cities. Do anything to take skills and
jobs to the interiors. Fix the primary schools. They have to teach well. Half our school kids can't read properly.

The cities need extensions with very low cost housing solutions, with good water, electricity and transport infrastructure. That is the only way the urban poor can live a life with dignity. Give them dignity. They didn't vote for you in Delhi, remember? Win them back.

Be real. Have work life balance. Why can't the PM catch a movie sometimes? Or eat chaat in Delhi somewhere? A humanised PM works better than a glorified PM.

No statues, please. School or statue? Hospital or statue? No need to explain further.

No personal attacks on opponents no matter how punchy the joke or the temptation to say it. Again, run it past those critical advisers first.

No hanging out with rich industrialists. Of course, you may need to officially. But that doesn't have to be a media event. Hang out with the billion people, not billionaires.

Ultimately, all of the above comes down to the party listening and acting according to the wishes of the people.

The new serial kissers of Bollywood

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 13 Februari 2015 | 07.20

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, Pulkit Samrat and Yami Gautam had to kiss in the freezing cold while shooting for their film in Himachal Pradesh. The film that the duo were shooting for, is Divya Khosla Kumar's second directorial, Sanam Re. While Pulkit didn't get the chance to lock lips in his debut film, Fukrey, barely coming close to the girl in the entire film, he did chance upon a kiss with Yami Gautam in the upcoming film that apparently revolves around the story of teenage sweethearts who reunite after years.

And while this is the first instance when Pulkit Samrat has kissed on-screen, we are sure it won't be the last. With his chocolate boy looks he sure seems competent enough to join the league of actors who don't shy away from a quick peck or a lingering smooch. Here's taking a look at who's in the run for the serial kisser tag in Bollywood.

The new serial kissers of Bollywood

02

Aditya Roy Kapur seems to have added to the list of the new serial kissers of Bollywood. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the lead pair of Abhishek Kapoor's Fitoor shared a passionate lip lock on a rickety bridge over the Dal Lake on Sunday as curious locals living in the adjacent houses looked on in amazement. The twosome play Noor and Firdaus, the desi versions of Charles Dickens' starcrossed lovers Pip and Estella from Great Expectations. Looking ethereal in white, Katrina is met on the bridge by a lovelorn Aditya who kisses her after offering her the warmth of his shawl. The shoot was delayed for a few hours after unexpected snowfall on Sunday morning. Aditya has earlier also smooched in the film, Aashiqui 2 and doesn't seem to have any qualms about kissing in front of the camera.

03

According to a report, Varun Dhawan will also lock lips with Yami Gautam in Badlapur. A Mumbai Mirror report states that the actor will be seen locking lips with senior actress Divya Dutta too. The report quotes a source as revealing that the two actors share a full-blown smooch and though they were uncomfortable at first, the scene was eventually executed after four retakes. Varun Dhawan is however quite nonchalant about the kiss. The report quotes the actor as saying that he was very comfortable kissing Divya as she was very sexy. After beginning his career with Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, Varun Dhawan is on a roll. Varun is now experimenting with a dark thriller. He will be seen playing the protagonist in Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur where he will romance three ladies.

04

Sushant Singh Rajput seems to be the new actor to join the serial kisser bandwagon. According to a report in DNA, Sushant and co-star Swastika Mukherjee have shot the longest kissing scene for their upcoming film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. The report quoted director Dibakar Banerjee stating that he wanted to throw Sushant Singh off guard and hence he had not briefed the actor about his intentions of shooting a lengthy kissing scene. The report further stated that Sushant was displeased at the end of it, but when he saw the final shot, he seemed fine with it. Previously he had kissing scenes in Shuddh Desi Romance and is all set to share a hot lip-lock with Anushka Sharma in PK. The actor seems uninhibited when it comes to locking lips on the silver screen.

10 reasons for the AAP tsunami

1.

Kejriwal's Appeal

For a city whose elite has over time developed a sense of entitlement, even grandeur, Kejriwal’s ‘I-am-one-of-you’ image resonated, particularly in the aftermath of the Anna movement. And he played it to the hilt – muffler around his head, a simple red or blue pullover, pumping flesh while walking through crowds. This helped people recall his pitch against the prevailing beacon-flashing VIP culture of the capital.

2.

AAP's Anti-Graft Credentials

The party’s 49-day govt in Delhi, dubbed by BJP as a ‘nightmare’, appears to have been a dream spell for many. Street-level corruption, such as police ‘hafta’ and extortion by MCD, had stopped during that short period, only to reappear after AAP exited. This experience cracked BJP’s traditional vote bank of traders and shopkeepers.

3.

Modi's Aura Of Invincibility Punctured

He won the 2014 LS virtually on his own and delivered Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand to BJP. But the Delhi voter didn’t find him relevant to the day-to-day running of the state govt. While his monogrammed suit was seen as his ‘pro-rich’ bias, especially by the underclass, his silence on hate speeches by saffron hardliners had an unsettling effect on middle class voters. He also looked distant, possibly because of his security cover, which he cannot help as PM.

4.

Bedi Gamble Didn't Work

BJP’s last-minute induction of Kiran Bedi as CM candidate — after the tepid response to Modi's Ramlila Maidan rally — was hailed as a masterstroke but it turned out to be a liability. Its Delhi leaders and workers had waited for 16 long years for the tide to turn in their favour. And when it did, they found an ‘outsider’ being foisted. On the ground, the BJP campaign was, therefore, dispirited. There was also talk of ‘sabotage’ by certain local party leaders.

5.

The Class Factor

While sections of the middle class and even the upper class might have supported AAP, the poor and the lower middle class voted overwhelmingly for it. The Congress vote bank switched to AAP almost en masse because of the latter's sustained work among slum dwellers and its promise of cheap water and electricity.

6.

Minority Vote

Muslims seem to have switched from Congress to AAP in their belief that it was a better bet to defeat BJP. The Christian vote, too, seems to have gone to AAP due to recent attacks on churches.

7.

Poorvanchali Vote

A substantial number of Delhi’s rising aspirational have-nots — a section targeted by AAP — are migrants from Bihar and eastern UP. They are said to dominate at least 5 seats and could have an important presence in many more. AAP gave as many as 14 tickets to poorvanchalis compared to three by BJP.

8.

Unhappy Babus

Govt employees — not an insubstantial number in Delhi — were unhappy with the Modi sarkar, possibly for the wrong reasons. The new biometric attendance system that forces them to report for work at 9.30am or lose salary has been giving them grief. Babus were also alarmed by the buzz about retirement age being advanced by two years.

9.

Delay Helped AAP

AAP was down and out after the Lok Sabha polls. An election in Delhi soon thereafter would have almost certainly led to a BJP victory. But polls here were delayed by nine months, helping AAP to regroup and regain people's faith.

10.

Targeting Kejriwal Backfired

By attacking Kejriwal, and calling him all sorts of names, BJP only helped in focusing the spotlight on him. In comparison, Kejriwal was restrained — he didn’t attack Modi or Bedi.

The new serial kissers of Bollywood

Delhi assembly election result 2015: How Kejriwal and his men made it a landslide

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal addressing over 110 meetings in just two months, restructuring of the party, firming up of issues close to people, a well-planned campaign and volunteer support were among the major reasons for AAP's landslide victory in Delhi assembly poll.

The party chose its candidate with much thinking and even welcomed candidates from other parties considering the winnability factor.

After its rout in Delhi in the last Lok Sabha elections, the party was not only hit by a series of desertions of leaders like Shazia Ilmi but questions were raised within the party from senior leaders like Yogendra Yadav. Despite the odds, the AAP chief sailed through the turbulence and rebuilt the party.

The party first decided to focus on Delhi and not contest upcoming Haryana and Maharashtra elections, despite opposition from senior party leaders and workers from the two states.

Restructuring the organisation and also involving its MLAs and other workers in party work, the party formed various frontal organizations like AAP's youth, student's and women wings, ST cell, Grameen Morcha, traders cell to tap and connect with voters.

It also decided to work on assembly seats where it had lost by a narrow margin in the last assembly election and regions like Outer Delhi where it had fared badly.

After the Delhi assembly was dissolved, the party came up with an elaborate plan and chalked out a well-crafted campaign strategy with Kejriwal himself leading from the front. Party sources say that since December last year, Kejriwal addressed more than 110 rallies.

The AAP chief picked the right issues at the right time, especially the issue of electricity and water and inflation. In Parliament, party MPs regularly raised issues related to the national capital.

Arijeet Bhattacharya: Kejriwal and the art of war

Among the people celebrating the AAP victory today are IITians. One tweeted, AAP: the best IIT start-up. Another said: Kejriwal ki placement lag gayi. But this was as much a feat in engineering a victory as it was in managing a campaign. Cues for which seem to have come from Sun Tzu's Art of War.

Rule of war #1: If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.

After the stinging 2014 loss, when Kejriwal was humbled in Varanasi by Narendra Modi, once his decision to contest 430 seats had been proved to be spectacularly foolish, Kejriwal did not roll over and pretend to die. He just came back to the capital and hit the trenches. As per reports, Kejriwal started his Jan Sabhas in December addressing about four to five of them in a day. That meant a direct connect with about 15,000-20,000 people on a regular basis. The Delhi Dialogues created a rich mine of data that could then be utilized to craft a very smart manifesto. If there was despondency after such a humiliating defeat, it was not evident among his social media soldiers who took on BJP trolls tweet for tweet, comment for comment.

Rule of war #2: The opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

By January, a seriously worried BJP unleashed its brahmastra Narendra Modi to lead its Delhi campaign. He began from Ram Lila Maidan thundering, voting for Kejriwal would be like voting in an anarchist, a Naxalite. With that remark, Kejriwal had succeeded in nudging the BJP to make this a presidential contest. David was now looking Goliath in the eye. For months, Kejriwal put up posters on auto rickshaws with his picture vs that of Mukhi or sometimes with a question mark. It forced the Amit Shah, with his all win record, to make the one tactical mistake he had avoided so far in elections to Maharashtra, Haryana or Jammu and Kashmir. He felt compelled to anoint Kiran Bedi as the foil for Kejriwal.

Rule of war #3: It is the rule in war, if ten times the enemy's strength, surround them; if five times, attack them; if double, be able to divide them; if equal, engage them.

Bedi's joining the poll battle, followed shortly by Shazia Ilmi's were severe setbacks given their earlier association with Kejriwal. But Kejriwal managed at every turn to upstage Bedi. First, he managed to neatly transfer the bhagoda tag to Bedi, by his offer for a debate. Kejriwal had prepared well for his campaign and he constantly checkmated Bedi by asking her to take a position on Delhi's statehood. With a BJP government at the Centre, Bedi was in no position to take a stand on the issue. There were the well disguised leaks. It turned out Crane Bedi wasn't the one to have wielded the crane on Indira Gandhi's illegally parked car. Even Bedi's earlier talk of taking on Kejriwal in his own constituency proved to be just bombast when the BJP gave her its strongest bastion of Krishna Nagar to defend — a task she failed to do. Kejriwal looked battle-hardened through the entire campaign, Bedi looked like a spring chicken.

Rule of war #4: To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

This was an election in which Kejriwal managed to create the maximum impact with the least amount of mudslinging. He never made the campaign personal refraining from attacks against Modi. Despite obvious bitterness at Bedi's switch, he refused to mount any character assassination attempts on her. He just waited for others to make mistakes. And Kejriwal's patience paid off — best illustrated in the manner he turned the "upadravi gotra" remark and Anna Hazare's cartoon to his own advantage. While Bedi fought the inertia that seized her local party leaders following her sudden elevation, Modi's suit of self-obsession exposed yawning chinks in BJP's armour. Neither of the issues were highlighted by Kejriwal in his speeches even though Rahul Gandhi did fall for the temptation to take a dig at Modi. Kejriwal focused on bijli, paani, wi-fi and other aam aadmi concerns throughout making it a positive message for change. Some BJP MPs attempts at polarization and even the mysterious church attacks were issues that could easily stir emotions. But this was a different Kejriwal, a smarter Kejriwal, one who refused to take the bait not even when it came from the Imam of Jama Masjid.

Rule of war #5: Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.

"Ek baar aur mauka dijiye. Iss baar chipakke baithoonga. (Give me one more opportunity. This time I will sit glued to the chair)". Kejriwal made a virtue of his apology and by extension of his 49-day stint in power. In contrast, there was a man who had refused to look mortified for a riot that claimed many lives in his watch. The apology did not weaken the Kejriwal campaign, it strengthened him. As did his humility in victory. Immediately after vanquishing his opponents, Kejriwal appeared in public with his wife and said, "I have dragged her here today," he said. "I told her the government will not take any action … I would not have been able to achieve anything without her. I can do nothing alone, I am a small man." This is modesty that goes down well with the Indian voter, possibly much more than an expensive suit.
