LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has shunted out Gonda superintendent of police, Navneet Kumar Rana, who had conducted a sting operation which showed a senior Samajwadi Party leader offering bribe for releasing culprits caught for trafficking of cattle, including cow, for slaughter. After the matter came to light on February 2, the chief minister assured proper inquiry and action against traffickers but on Wednesday transferred the officer.
Newly appointed vice-chairman of UP Council of Sugarcane Research, KC Pandey, who is also SP's national secretary, enjoys the status of a minister of state as vice-chairman of the body. The Gonda superintendent of police, Navneet Kumar Rana, had alleged that the minister offered the bribe over phone. An FIR has been lodged in the case at City Kotwali of Gonda. But Pandey had described the charge as conspiracy against him.
On December 29, 2012, police seized a truck carrying 50 oxen in Khargapur, Gonda. Later, some people including one Ashutosh Pandey came to Rana and offered bribe for leaving the seized truck. Rana conducted a sting operation and recorded how traffickers offered him bribe. At the same time, Rana got a telephone call. The caller identified himself as KC Pandey and offered Rs 1 lakh bribe. The officer also recorded the conversation. Ashutosh was arrested.
On February 2, 2013, additional director general of police, law and order, Arun Kumar had said that the state government has taken the Gonda incident seriously and action is being taken against accused. On February 3, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav while replying to media queries had assured inquiry and action against culprits. However on Wednesday, instead of action against culprits, Rana was shunted out from Gonda and Pandey was given a clean chit.
