An alert has been sounded in the coastal areas in South Gujarat including union territory of Daman to prepare for Nilofar
Though the effect of the cyclonic storm would be at a much lesser scale in the coastal belts of south Gujarat with heavy rains predicted by the meteorological department, but the district administration in Surat, Valsad and Navsari are taking no chances.
Official sources said that due to the cyclone, the coastal districts in south Gujarat will be experiencing a bad weather on October 30 and October 31. There is all likelihood of heavy to heavy rains in the coastal areas till November 1. The sea will be rough and the cyclonic winds are also likely to blow. But, compared to Saurashtra and Kutch, the effect of cyclone would be much lesser in South Gujarat.
"A meeting was convened at the district collector's office on Tuesday to discuss the preparedness in the coastal areas due to the possibility of heavy rains in the coastal areas. We have strictly conveyed to the fishermen community not to venture out in the sea till Saturday. All those fishermen who had gone for fishing have been summoned back after passing alert message on the wireless system," said additional district collector of Valsad, IJ Mali.
