MADURAI: About 250 people, who were returning from the Sundara Mahalingam temple near Saptur in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, were stranded in a forest after heavy rain brought flash floods in a stream on Sunday. All of them were rescued by fire service, police and forest department personnel.

The devotees went to the temple, situated in the forest near Rajapalayam, on Sunday morning. On their return, they were shocked to see that the forest stream, which had just ankle-deep water in the morning, was flooded. They could not cross the stream.

The devotees raised an alarm, and fire service personnel accompanied by the forest department and police rescued them by tying a rope across the stream.

Rains were continuing in many southern districts in the state, and flash floods were occurring in the forest regions.
