Leela hotels founder Capt Krishnan Nair passes away

MUMBAI: Founder of Leela Group of Hotels, Capt C P Krishnan Nair (92), passed away early morning after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Leela, and sons, Vivek and Dinesh.

The last rites shall be performed on Sunday at 4pm at Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu, Mumbai, said a statement from the Leela Group. A memorial prayer ceremony is scheduled at The Leela Mumbai at 4pm on Thursday.

A freedom fighter and an officer of the Indian Army, he started the Leela chain in 1987. Globally recognized as a hotelier extraordinaire, visionary and an environmentalist, Nair is also a Padma Bhushan awardee.

Last year, he stepped down as chairman of the hotels company. His elder son, Vivek, was made the chairman and managing director while younger son, Dinesh, was appointed as co-chairman and managing director.
