Ramulu was coming out of MA Baig function hall on Miryalaguda road after attending the marriage of New Democracy leader Parvatalu's daughter when the assailants, who were hiding in nearby bushes, suddenly pounced on his security guards and threw chilli powder on them. The assailants then fired three rounds into Ramulu's head and chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. Ramulu is the brother of senior Maoist leader Sambasivudu, who was also murdered about three years ago. Incidentally, Ramulu had some time ago lodged a complaint with the police stating that he was faced with threat to his life.
The security guards attempted to fire at the assailants but they scaled the compound wall and escaped. Police pressed a clues team and a dog squad to trace the culprits. The sniffer dogs went up to a railway line about a kilometre away and stopped. Police suspect that they assailants may have escaped in a waiting vehicle towards Addanki road.
Tension mounted up as the news spread in the town. One of the security guards of Ramulu told media that the assailants, all youth, were eight in number. While some of them caught hold of the legs and waist of the security guards, the others threw chilli powder. Police recovered five bullet shells from the spot. The guard said the attackers first fired in the air to scare away the people. Ironically, the assault took place as hundreds of people attending the marriage watched in utter shock.
Chandrasekhar Rao condemned the incident and demanded that those responsible for the murderous assault should be identified and punished.
Ramulu is a native of Dasireddygudem in Valigonda mandal of Nalgonda district. He left the Maoist movement on June 13, 2007 and surrendered before the police in Hyderabad. There have been at least four attempts on his life since he came out of underground. First unidentified people sent poisonous snakes into his house. This was followed by mixing of poison in his food. The last attack on him was in April 2013 during a TRS meeting in Pochampalli mandal of Nalgonda district. He, however, survived all the earlier attacks.
Senior police officials inspected the murder spot and formed special teams to nab the assailants.
