Bombay high court seeks action against 66,000 illegal structures in Pimpri Chinchwad

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday gave its go ahead for the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal corporation to act against an estimated 66,000 illegal structures in the township. A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Amjad Sayed also directed the police commissioner to provide protection to the municipal commissioner and the demolition squad. This came after the court was informed that the earlier municipal commissioner had reported about threats to his life over the issue of action against illegal structures.

The court has asked that action including notices to be issued to owners of illegal structures, criminal cases to be filed and demolitions be undertaken by the corporation. The court has asked the civic body to file a compliance report in the court after four weeks. As per the corporation's estimates there are over 66,000 illegal structures in Pimpri Chinchwad limits.

The court also clarified that a proposal pending before the state to regularise all illegal structures in the town could not come in the way of the demolitions as no decision had been taken on it. The court's orders came on a public interest litigation filed by local resident J Dange. advocate Uday Warunjikar, counsel for the petitioner alleged inaction on the part of the authorities in acting against illegal structures.
