Coast Guard arrests nine Sri Lankan fishermen off Chennai coast

CHENNAI: The Indian Coast Guard arrested nine Sri Lankan fishermen and seized two mechanized boats for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line on Wednesday night. The fishermen were arrested 38 nautical miles off Chennai coast at 11.30pm, said an official release.

"ICG Dornier (the maritime surveillance aircraft) detected two boats while on night surveillance and information was passed onto Coast Guard ship Rajkamal, tasked for surveillance off Tamil Nadu coast," the release said.

The boats, namely Mangla-2 and Mangala-3, were seized under the Maritime Zone of India Act, 1981. The boats were handed over to the Chennai police on Thursday.

The Indian Coast Guard Region (East) has arrested 308 Sri Lankan fishermen and seized 59 fishing boats for Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) violations in the last one year, according to the release.
