Police said on Sunday that Mohamed Alam, a UML candidate for the November 19 general elections, was killed by Ramchandra Pyasi Kushwaha a rival from his own party with help from Indian nationals Atik Khan and Raju Srivastava
Alam was shot outside the a flour mill on 4 October by two men on a motorcycle with Indian license plates and died in hospital in Kathmandu without regaining consciousness a week later.
The accused Kushwaha is a former lawmaker while Khan runs a business in the Nepalese border city of Birganj and Srivastava is a resident of Indian border city of Raxaul. The trio hired professional assassins to kill Alam, a day after he was announced as a UML candidate from Bara - 4 constituency.
According to the police, there had been two previous unsuccessful attempts to kill Alam.
The general elections is expected to be marred by violence as the breakaway CPN-Maoist has declared that it will disrupt the polls and its main target will be candidates of it mother party UCPN (Maoist).
Last Friday, the army's bomb disposal unit had to diffuse explosives bombs in the southern Nepal district of Siraha placed ahead of Prachanda's campaigning. A Maoist candidate was also attacked in his home by cadres of the breakaway Maoist on Friday.
