Daughter of former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Bhakthavatsalam, Sarojini was born in Chennai on September 21, 1921 and was involved in various social service activities at an early age along with her mother Gnanasundarambal. She was the president of the Women India Association, an NGO working on women-related issues, and the Mylapore Academy. She was the aunt of Union environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan.
Though she was forced to discontinue education at an early age, Sarojini continued her education after marriage. And at a ripe age of 80, she got a PhD in 'Social Service and Swami Narayan Movement.'
She had been president of the Indian Red Cross Society for nearly 35 years during which the society was involved in rescue and relief work of people affected by natural calamities in Odisha and Gujarat, apart from Tamil Nadu. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1973 and Padma Bhushan in 2009.
In a condolence message, chief minister Jayalalithaa recalled the contributions of Sarojini for the upliftment of women. "Till her death, Sarojini Varadappan was involved in social service and I express my heartfelt condolence to the family members," said the chief minister.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi recalled her contributions to the welfare of women. "She used to call on me during my stint as chief minister and discuss freely various issues concerning women and arrive at a solution to the problems. Her death is a great loss to women," said Karunanidhi.
"Sarojini Varadappan was responsible for educating many women and she was also the administrator of many educational institutions like the Poonamallee Girls Higher Secondary School," said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief BS Gnanadesikan.
