Jayalalithaa offers financial aid to Kanyakumari fishermen who survived Cyclone Phailin

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday extended a financial aid of Rs one lakh each to the 18 fishermen from Kanyakumari who survived Cyclone Phailin off Odisha coast last week.

"I was very upset when I came to know of your plight on the high seas," she told the fishermen, who called on her at the state secretariat on Thursday.

Jayalalithaa had directed the fisheries department to seek assistance from the Coast Guard and the Odisha government to rescue the fishermen. The fishermen had registered two boats with the Odisha government and had been fishing for the last two years. On the fateful day, the rough sea battered their boats and they had to swim for nearly 12 hours, battling the high tides, and reach the mangrove forests of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.

Jayalalithaa said the state was ready to extend any kind of assistance in the future. "You have to start a fresh life by going to your native towns and lead a peaceful life," she said.

The Tamil Nadu fisheries department made elaborate arrangements to bring the fishermen in a flight from Bhubaneshwar and accommodate them in Tamil Nadu Veterinary Sciences University in Vepery. The fishermen will reach their native towns on Friday.
