PARIS: French auto registrations dropped 11% last month, led by Volkswagen, Ford and Peugeot, challenging hopes for a swift stabilisation of the market for new cars.

Car registrations fell to 85,565 vehicles in August, a slow holiday month from which it is hard to extrapolate sales trends, France's CCFA industry group said on Monday.

Sales for the first eight months of the year were down 10%, but the Paris-based organisation maintained its full-year forecast of an 8% decline.

European market leader Volkswagen led the August decline with a 24% plunge essentially due to weaker sales by its namesake core brand.

Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen were among other mass automakers that fared poorly, with respective declines of 19% and 17%.

But Fiat defied the slump with a 10% sales gain, and Renault sales also rose 1.7%.
