Modi should make speeches only from replicas of Red Fort, Digvijaya Singh says

RAIPUR: Congress general Secretary, Digvijaya Singh, has said that it would be in the best interest of the country that Gujarat chief minister, Narender Modi, makes his speeches from the replicas of the Red Fort rather than the real one.

Reacting to Chhattisgarh government's "gimmick" to project Modi as the prime ministerial candidate by making him address the concluding event of chief minister Raman Singh's Vikas Yatra from a replica of the historic Red Fort, the Congress leader said, "I want that he should make his speeches from such imaginary 'Quilas' (forts) only."

Ridiculing Modi for making "false and tall" claims about Gujarat's progress, Singh said contrary to the general perception, the state was under a debt of over Rs 1.34 lakh crores. "Gujarat's debt has increased from Rs 24,000 crore in 2002 to Rs 1.34 lakh crore, making every resident of the state indebted to the tune of Rs 23,600", he said.

Taking a dig at Raman Singh, the Congress leader said the "chawal wale baba" (name acquired by the chief minister for subsidizing rice to Rs 2 per kg) was trying to take credit for various welfare schemes mooted by the Centre. "The Centre provides a subsidy of Rs 22 by providing rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg to Chhattisgarh government. The chief minister has added a subsidy of only Rs one to it and is projecting himself as the baba", he said.

Lauding the role of the UPA government in bringing the Food Security Act, Singh criticized the Chhattisgarh government for opposing it. He also accused the Raman Singh government of being neck deep in corruption and demanded that the courts should take cognizance of the Indira Cooperative Bank manager's narco-analysis test in the cooperative bank scam in which he had accused the CM and his four ministers of accepting bribe.
