NEW DELHI: Former external affairs minister and BJP MP Jaswant Singh on Wednesday raised the Syrian upheaval in the Lok Sabha, terming the civil war as "extremely brutal and uncivil" but at the same time speaking out against any unilateral military intervention by the western forces in the Arab nation.
With the US leading the move for a "limited" military strike in Syria in the wake of the Bashar-al-Assad regime's recent chemical attack on its own people, Singh called upon the government to speak out louder against "global policing and western hegemony".
"The West has no authority to take action against any other country, having caused so much damage to our neighbourhood," he told the Lok Sabha.
The BJP leader said the unilateral move by the US and other western nations to intervene in the Syrian civil war should be unacceptable to India. Singh alleged that the government had acted belatedly by issuing a statement only on Tuesday, counselling against military intervention in Syria. "Whereas the world took a stand, India acted belatedly," he said.
A statement issued by the MEA had on Tuesday said: "India has consistently called upon all sides to abjure violence, so that conditions can be created for an inclusive political dialogue leading to a comprehensive political solution, taking into account the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people. There can be no military solution to this conflict. We continue to support the proposed 'International Conference on Syria' [Geneva-II]... for bringing the Syrian government and the opposition to the negotiating table."
Singh, while recalling UK Prime Minister David Cameron's statement naming India among the countries consulted on the proposed military intervention in Syria, told the Lok Sabha that the government had followed it up with a rather weak clarification, calling Cameron's reference to India as an "innocent mistake".
