ATHENS: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Greece on Wednesday, according to the Athens Observatory, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The observatory said the quake hit after midday near the central city of Lamia, some 120 kilometres (75 miles) northwest of Athens. It was felt in the capital.

It had been preceded by a weaker 4.2 magnitude tremor, the observatory said.

"It was a medium quake, in (an) area capable of 5.0-5.5-magnitude quakes," seismologist Thanassis Ganas told To Vima radio. "It's a normal tremor for the area."

The state-run ANA agency had earlier estimated the magnitude at 5.3.

Greece is the European country that is most prone to earthquakes.

In September 1999 a 5.9 magnitude quake killed 143 people in Athens and the region northwest of the capital.
