Tamil poet and lyricist Vaali's mortal remains consigned to flames

CHENNAI: The mortal remains of Tamil poet and lyricist Vaali, who died of a respiratory illness in Chennai on Thursday, were consigned to flames at the Besant Nagar crematorium on Friday afternoon.

Politicians, film personalities and people from all walks life thronged to the poet's residence at RA Puram to pay their last respects to him. DMK chief M Karunanidhi, actors Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijaykanth, Ajith, Shalini and Dhanush, film directors K Balachander and Bharathiraja and lyricist Vairamuthu were among those who visited the poet's residence.

Governor K Rosaiah condoled the death of the poet. In his condolence message, the governor said: "The passing away of Vaali, a great legend in his field, has left a void in Tamil cinema."

Vaali wrote more than 10,000 Tamil songs in a career spanning over five decades. Some of his famous songs include 'Mukkabla' (Kadhalan), 'Maya Machindra' (Indian), 'Inji iduppazhaga' (Thevar Magan) 'Ennai Vilai Azhagae' (Kadhalar Dhinam), 'Ale Ale' (Boys) 'Oru Maalai' (Ghajini), to name a few.

He wrote a number of books including 'Naanum Indha Nootrandum,' his autobiography.

Vaali acted in movies like 'Hey Ram,' 'Sathya' and 'Paarthale Parvasam' and 'Poikal Kudhirai.'
