Hollande says France must do 'more' to maintain train lines

PARIS: President Francois Hollande said on Sunday that France needed to do "much more" to ensure the upkeep of regional rail lines, after a derailment near Paris left six people dead.

"We must do much more to maintain traditional lines, existing lines," Hollande said during a Bastille Day interview with top television channels.

The SNCF state rail company said the accident at Bretigny-sur-Orge on Friday was the result of a faulty track and the transport minister complained of under-funding for outdated regional train lines as France made its high-speed TGV lines a priority.

"The first conclusion we will draw (from the accident) is to ensure that, in the significant investments being made in the coming years, the priority is on traditional intercity lines ," Hollande said.

He said there were no indications that the derailment, caused by a metal connector bar that had come loose and lodged itself in the middle of the track, was anything but an accident.

"We cannot rule anything out, but... I think this was a technical failure," he said.
