BHOPAL: Six accused, allegedly involved in gang rape of a 39-year-old Swiss tourist in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh (MP) on March 15, have been remanded to 15 days' judicial custody.

Chief judicial magistrate R P Yadav passed an order to the effect on Tuesday afternoon. They were remanded to police custody for a day on Monday after police said that they wanted to investigate possible involvement of seventh accused in the case.

Though the police had sought for 10-day remand, the court remanded them to their custody for a single day.

Those arrested were Kanjar Baba (20), Bhutha (25), Rampro (25), Gaza alias Brijesh (25) Vishnu (25) and Nitin Kumar - all residents of Kanjar Tola settlement in Jharia village, located - 2km from the spot where the victim was raped and 8km from the district headquarters.

"As the victim had mentioned in her statement that six to seven persons were involved in the crime, we interrogated the accused so that the leftovers could be identified. But nothing was found. They have confessed that only six persons were involved," D K Arya, deputy inspector general (DIG) Chambal range told TOI.

Counsel for one of the accused sought for bail arguing that one of the accused, Nitin, was a minor. However, police produced documents claiming that he was an adult and also had a 5-year-old daughter.

Asked about the TIP identification parade (TIP) of the accused, DIG said that the victim was in a state of shock and they have to wait until she agrees to visit Datia again. "Once she comes, we would ensure that the proceedings for TIP are completed at the earliest," he said. The Swiss couple had left for New Delhi on Saturday.

The 39-year-old Swiss woman, on a cycling trip along with her companion, was gang-raped at a forest area near Sewda road in Datia district on March 15. The couple - on adventure tourism in India - decided to camp at a forest area for the night while on their way back from Orchha (temple city), and were proceeding to Agra.
