BHOPAL: Narendra Modi should never become prime minister of India as he still has the blood of innocent lives on his hands. In case he comes to power, India's image would be maligned, said film actor Shabana Azmi in the state capital to attend the campaign #onebillionrising (OBR) on Thursday.
"Someone, who is still unapologetic, whose name hasn't been cleared yet in the Godhra riots and is still denied the US visa, how can he (Modi) be a good candidate for the post of the prime minister in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections?" said Shabana talking to the TOI during her visit to Bhopal.
Though she did not back Rahul Gandhi as the alternative, she only said India needs a 'proper candidate' as a PM.
"In the recent times after the Delhi-gang rape, public servants, politicians and religious gurus have made all sorts of comments regarding women, across all political affiliations. Some attributed rapes to skimpy clothes (Andhra Pradesh police chief V Dinesh Reddy) while others pinpoint free mixing with men as the cause of rapes ( Mamata Banerjee)," she said.
"Samajwadi Party (Abu Asim Azmi) and CPM (Abhijit Mukherjee) politicians too have courted controversies with their derogatory comments. Even spiritual gurus like Asaram Bapu come up with ridiculous notions like calling the gang-rapists 'brothers' and using some magic mantra of his for a change of their hearts. He (Bapu) should use his 'magic mantra' so that good sense (sadbuddhi) prevails on him," said Shabana.
She also slammed Modi for his derogatory remarks against Sunanda Pushkar, (Shashi Tharoor's wife) and calling her his '50 crore girlfriend' on Twitter.
"The parties should expel such politicians to show that they actually mean what they say about expressing solidarity with women," she demanded while addressing the gathering #onebillionrising (OBR)
Item songs bad for women's image
Shabana Azmi also criticised the trend of 'item songs' in films which stereotype women.
Decrying recent item numbers, she said, "When there are songs like 'Main to tandoori murgi hoon yaar, Gatkaa le saiyyan alcohol se,' which are instigating men to attack us, then what kind of a message we are really putting out there?"
"The portrayal of women in films is generally not as strong characters. Filmmakers should be conscientious about the kind of films they make and take responsibility for it. However, there shouldn't be any moral policing, which has made a joke of the Censor Board in recent times," Shabana said.
Recently, at the Jaipur Literary Fest, her husband Javed Akhtar had also slammed the item songs and the writers who are penning them.
