LUCKNOW: Swami Nityanand, who hit the headlines in 2010 in connection with a sex scandal and was jailed on charges of sexual harassment, has been awarded the title of 'mahamandaleshwar' by the Panchayati Mahanirmani Akhara in the ongoing Maha Kumbh mela in Allahabad. The ceremony was carried out late on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, as soon as other akharas came to know about it, they demanded Mahanirmani Akhara to strip Nityanand of the title or face boycott. However, Mahanirmani Akhara defended its decision by saying that Nityanand has not been convicted by any court.
Nithyananda, who is founder of Dhyanapeetam ashram based in Banglore, was in controversy in March 2010 when a sleazy tape showing him surfaced. Later, he was also accused of sexual harassment. He had then claimed that video was morphed and had vehemently denied all charges. However, he went underground after a case was lodged against him by the police. He was arrested from Arki near Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, in April 2010. Later, he was granted bail.
Though Nityanand announced to resign as the head of his Dhyanapeetam ashram and from all the trusts associated with it to live life in 'spiritual seclusion', the controversy continued to haunt him. Again in April 2012, Nityanand was in the eye of the storm when he was appointed as the 293rd pontiff of the Madurai Adheenam Mutt in Tamil Nadu, one of the oldest Saivite mutts in India but was later sacked following widespread protests.
Now, Mahanirmani Akhara's decision to grant mahamandaleshwar title has created another controversy. Mahandaleshwar is also among the highest ranking post in the akhara hierarchy. The duty of a mahamandaleshwar is to propagate religion and serve people. Mahanirvani Akhara said that Nityanand has been conferred with the title in recognition of his and his Guru's long standing association with the Aakhara. However, Mahant Gyandas, head of the Akhara Parishad, a body having representatives of all the 13 akharas, described Nityanand's appointment as a blow to the cause for which akharas were formed.
"We are supposed to propagate and protect religion. For this, we need to teach people right values and lead by example. A person carrying out this responsibility should be spotless," he said and added "It is a sad day for the seer community and we will oppose the move tooth and nail."
